Children’s health does not belong on the back burner

What have Republican leaders put up for a vote lately? Well, they successfully rammed through a budget that contains massive cuts to Medicaid and Medicare to fund giant tax cuts for billionaires. They’ve also repealed a consumer protection that protects your right to take banks to court. You know what’s not been at the top of their to-do list? Funding health care for kids. The Children’s Health Insurance Program – legislation written by Ted Kennedy and Orrin Hatch, a Democrat and a Republican – has worked for 20 years, providing relief to worried parents and good health care for sick kids. It has now been 27 days since this program expired. Children’s health does not belong on the back burner – so my colleagues and I will continue to urge the Republican leadership to reauthorize this funding.
